The recent pandemic has disrupted the way schools operate and their decisions for the upcoming year. Of the $30.75 billion allotted for the Education Stabilization Fund through the CARES Act, Congress has set aside approximately $13.2 billion for the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund in recognition of the struggles felt by schools and districts nationwide. The funding can be used to address learning loss in literacy and to prepare for distance or blended learning for the upcoming school year.
The Office of Elementary and Secondary Education announced that ESSER Fund awards will be granted to state education agencies (SEAs) in proportion to how funds were disbursed for previous legislation. Specifically, they will be awarded along the same lines as funds from Part A of Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, as it was amended for the 2019 fiscal year.
The Department of Education released estimates for how much money each state should receive and has specified that the funds must be spent by September 2022.
